Porphyrinoid liquid crystals

Macrocyclic systems, such as porphyrins or phthalocyanines, provide a family of versatlie core motifs for discotic liquid crystals. Their efficiency in stabilizing discotic mesophases stems from their planar structures, efficient stacking interactions, and conformational rigidity.

Our work has shown that appropriately substituted bipyrrole-containing porphyrinoids, namely porphycenes and cyclo[8]pyrroles, stabilize a variety of discotic and lamellar mesophases either alone or when combined with electron acceptors.
