Strained and Nonplanar Aromatics

We have developed a new synthetic strategy, called the fold-in method, which enables conversion of appropriately designed cyclophane structures into bowl- and belt-shaped aromatic systems. The most recent highlights of this work include the synthesis of chrysaorole, involving the Ni-mediated coupling of brominated carbazolophanes, and the synthesis of a carbazole-based molecular belt via intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation.
